Dear Parish Family:
Today we are presented with the image of the Old Testament patriarch Abraham. St. Paul used him as an exemplar of faith:
“He believed, hoping against hope, that he would become ‘the father of many nations…” (Romans 4, 18)
The basis of this hope was a promise, not something owed to him. God seems to delight in choosing the most unlikely candidates for proclaiming the message of mercy and the true nature of grace. I wonder what the hated tax collector, Matthew, must have felt when Jesus said to him: “Follow me!” (Matthew 9, 9)
Our world today is really not all that different from the world of the prophets of old. We, too, are longing for a reason for hope; yet, at the same time, we are critical of those very institutions that have been entrusted with proclaiming that message. Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, reminded us this year in his encyclical letter, Spe Salvi, that
“This great hope can only be God, who encompasses the whole of reality and who can bestow upon us what we, by ourselves, cannot attain.” (#31)
The very fact, however, that we long for this reality is a reminder that
“His Kingdom is not an imaginary hereafter, situated in a future that will never arrive; his Kingdom is present wherever he is loved and wherever his love reaches us.” (#31)
The Holy Father suggests three settings for learning and practicing hope: prayer, suffering, and judgment. Each provides a different appreciation for the prophet’s words:
“For it is love that I desire, not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than holocausts.” (Hosea 6, 6)
Yours in Christ, Father Bill Foley
Tour Guides Needed! We are planning a journey that will take us from September to Easter and beyond. It is commonly called a Journey in Faith or also the RCIA Program. Some of the inquiries will be children and some will be adults and they all need our help. The cost is about 1˝ hours per week, a little extra prayer and willingness to let the Lord work through you. The rewards in this life will be the thanks you receive from those who make the journey, seeing the faces of those who are initiated at the Easter Vigil and the knowledge that you too have followed Christ’s command to “Go, teach all nations”. If you feel this call, please contact the Rectory at 301-627-3255, Vernon Griffith 301-627-2177 or Charlie Long 301-627-4542.
