Dear Parish Family:
Today we are being reminded of the two key meanings of the word priest. At Sinai, the Lord said to the people through Moses:
“You shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation…” (Exodus 19, 6)
In the gospel, Jesus sent his closest followers, the apostles, with the following instruction and reminder:
“As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received, without cost you are to give.” (Matthew 10, 7-8)
A priest is one who offers sacrifice. We are rejoicing this weekend in the ordination of new priests for the Archdiocese! The focus of the ordained priest is the sacramental ministry, especially the Eucharist, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The priesthood of the baptized is less public, but, nonetheless, most effective. Shortly after I became a pastor for the first time, in the 1990’s, I met a widower who had recently retired. He seemed to have time on his hands and to be at a loss as to the very meaning of his life. Once I offered him an opportunity to be involved in the life of the parish, he gave of himself completely. There was little that Ray would not do, even when sickness sapped his strength. His devotion reflected well the beatitudes. Ray did not show up for his ministry last Sunday; he had gone home to God! As we reflect on the meaning of life, we are reminded that all is gift:
“But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.” (Romans 5, 6)
Yours in Christ, Father Bill Foley

ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY NEWS If you wonder what your parish SVDP conference is doing since reactivating this past month, we are busy assisting persons from Upper Marlboro and the larger Prince Georges County community. During May we received 9 requests for help and so far provided financial and other assistance to 4 persons/families. We are working with 2 churches in the local area to help with a 5th request, and received help from another parish with a 6th. We provided assistance with utility bills, gasoline, rent, eyeglasses and medicine needed to continue working, getting documents needed to apply for low cost housing, a utility assistance program and a job referral. Requests for rent, mortgage and utility help is a large and growing part of what we are seeing. Please continue to support the work of St. Mary’s SVDP conference by giving generously through Poor Box donations and SVDP designated assistance in our collections.
