Dear Parish Family: I am frequently asked to pray for people who have just been diagnosed with cancer or are facing surgery or some other life-threatening situation. In recent months, I am also being asked to pray for families whose bread-winners have lost their jobs or whose homes might soon be “in foreclosure.” In the midst of all this “sad news” Jesus boldly proclaims:
“Do not be afraid!” (Matthew 10, 26)
The saint is not an “other-worldly” person whose object it is to escape the concerns of the day. The saint is immersed in the daily grind and accepts his or her responsibilities, yet remains open to the revelation of God’s presence. The saint is a person of hope! I continue to be surprised by the “non-coincidences” in my own life. It is true that when a door closes, often another opens. All we need is a little perspective after being confronted with a crisis. Perspective helps the person who is open to faith realize that the stone which hit and hurt is really but a small fraction of the many rocks that had been hurled at Jesus (who has shielded them from us)! Awareness is a grace that leads to gratitude which, in turn, produces courage. Such is the faith contained in these words:
“For if by the transgression of the one the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many.” (Romans 5, 15)
Yours in Christ, Father Bill Foley

ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY NEWS If you wonder what your parish SVDP conference is doing since reactivating this past month, we are busy assisting persons from Upper Marlboro and the larger Prince Georges County community. During May we received 9 requests for help and so far provided financial and other assistance to 4 persons/families. We are working with 2 churches in the local area to help with a 5th request, and received help from another parish with a 6th. We provided assistance with utility bills, gasoline, rent, eyeglasses and medicine needed to continue working, getting documents needed to apply for low cost housing, a utility assistance program and a job referral. Requests for rent, mortgage and utility help is a large and growing part of what we are seeing. Please continue to support the work of St. Mary’s SVDP conference by giving generously through Poor Box donations and SVDP designated assistance in our collections. SVDP meetings will be held every 2nd & 4th Wednesday in the PCR Building.

ANNUAL PETER PENCE COLLECTION on June 28-29, in support of the works of the Holy Father. The theme for this year’s collection echoes that of the Holy Father’s historic apostolic journey to the United States this past April, Christ Our Hope, and builds upon his recent encyclical, Spe Salvi (On Christian Hope). In that encyclical, Pope Benedict XVI wrote that faith in Christ brings well founded hope in eternal salvation, the “great hope” that can sustain people through the trials of this world. He spoke about this also in his homily at the Mass at Nationals Park, telling “by your prayers, by the witness of your faith, by the fruitfulness of you charity, may you point the way towards that vast horizon of hope, the vision of a world reconciled and renewed in Jesus Christ our Savior” Thank you for your generosity.
CATHOLIC STANDARD – Do you receive the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Washington at home? The Archdiocese sends a certain number of Catholic Standard subscriptions to St. Mary’s members; if you have no recollection of paying for it, this means that you are receiving it free; however, this also means that St. Mary’s is paying for it out of its annual budget. You can help us reduce the amount St. Mary’s must pay by subscribing to the Catholic Standard yourself. To subscribe yourself, you will find subscription envelopes on the book shelves in the middle and the back of the church.
