Dear Friends and Visitors:

Welcome to all who visit us and Our Nation’s Capital this holiday weekend! Hopefully, you can rest and relax from the busy-ness of your daily lives. Unfortunately, we Americans find it difficult to do nothing. Even on our so-called holidays, we schedule ourselves for an array of activity and find that we want to check messages and e-mails frequently. Busy-ness is a way of avoiding intimacy and ultimate reality. When was the last time you sat still and observed ants building an ant hill or birds singing to one another? When was the last time you turned your everyday burdens over to God? So, sit back; place your feet squarely on the ground; rest your hands gently in your lap; and close your eyes. Listen to these words:

“Come to me all you who labor

and are burdened, and I will

give you rest.”

(Matthew 11, 28)

Repeat in your minds over and over again the holy name Jesus. Breathe in and breathe out this awesome name. Don’t speak it out loud! Let all variety of thought and feeling pass through your conscious awareness; but do not hold on to any one thought or feeling. Keep repeating that sacred mantra. Listen again to those words from the gospel. This weekend, in the midst of gatherings and fireworks, we are celebrating 232 years since a declaration that assured us of our God-given right to pursue happiness. What gives us enduring joy? Contemplative prayer promotes awareness. To whom do these words of the prophet Zechariah refer and what was he about to do for us:

“See, your king shall come

to you, a just savior is he,

meek and riding on an ass?”

(Zechariah 9, 9)

Yours in Christ,

Father Bill Foley
