Pastoral Council St. Mary of the Assumption Minutes of May 15, 2008 Meeting
Present: Fr. William Foley, Pastor Mr. Larry Horton Fr. Mark White, Associate Pastor Mrs. Kathy Wyvill Chairperson Sue Payne Mrs. Gloria Garner Mrs. Regina Piazza Mrs. Barbara Fealy Mr. Charlie Long Mrs. Josephine Clay
Introduction
The meeting was held in St. Mary’s School. Chairperson Sue Payne called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m. Fr. Foley opened the meeting with a prayer.
Copies of the minutes to the April 17, 2008 meeting were distributed. It was noted that these minutes were not posted in the parish website. There were no corrections or additions to the minutes.
Elections
Certain current members will remain on the Council, namely: Gloria Garner, Annette Gilbert-Jackson, Josephine Clay and Barbara Fealy. The appointed members are Steven Showalter, Regina Piazza and Charles Long. The Council is open for four new members. Nine candidates have written a short biography of themselves, which have been posted in the bulletin board. The election will be held at each Mass on May 17 and 18. The ballot will be the biographical handout with a box to check next to the candidate’s name. Before the election, there will be an announcement of eligible voters who must be 18 years old and a registered parishioner. Council members will pass out the ballots. The following members will be present at the following Mass times:
May 17 5:00 p.m. Barbara Fealy 7:00 p.m. Charles Long May 18 7:30 a.m. Sue Payne, Gloria Garner 9:30 a.m. Kathy Wyvill (tentative) 11:30 a.m. Regina Piazza
The collection of the ballot will be similar to the collection of envelopes during the Archbishop’s appeal. Ballots will be counted on Monday, May 19, 2008.
Goals and Ideas
There will be a reception after each Mass on May 31, 2008 and June 1, 2008. Although Bill Gorman will not be present, Dr. Susan Timmoney will present the condensed and suggested goals for the Parish. This reception is an opportunity to share ideas and to dialogue with people. There will be some participants from the various
ministries. Additionally, architectural drawings for the Family Life Center and the Crandall-Rothstein House will be available for viewing. The Hospitality Committee will probably need assistance in light of this reception. Ellen Storey needs to coordinate with the Council.
Parish Directory
“Steve” is the point of contact at Olan Mills for coordinating the photo session with the Parish. The number of families will affect the number of shooting days. There are approximately 200 families for the photo sessions. The best form of advertisement is by word of mouth. It has been noted that there is some reluctance in publishing private information with the photos.
The photo session will run for approximately six days. There is a preference to have consecutive days. In addition to an October photo session, a weekend photo session in August is being considered. August 15 and 16, however, are not practicable days due to the Parish’s Feast Day.
Stacie Mayuga is a possible parishioner who can co-coordinate with Larry Horton concerning the logistics for this photo session. As of today, August 15, August 16 and dates in October need to be finalized.
Parish Registration List
Fifty names were taken off of the list of 400, There were changes in telephone numbers and deletions in the directory.
Parish Mission
It has been expressed whether the Parish would want one. Perhaps, the goals need to be reconsidered. As an aside, the Year of St. Paul starts June 28, 2008. The Year of St. Paul will be part of next meeting’s agenda.
The topic of evangelization was brought up as a tool to welcome new people and to revitalize the parish community. Fr. Foley and Fr. White will initially discuss among themselves first.
A brochure titled “Gospel Call – A Four-day Faith-renewal Event” was circulated. The event involves the following elements: preaching, prayer together in different churches, fellowship, faith education and development and follow through.
Miscellaneous
Fr. Foley closed the meeting with a prayer. The meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
