       Sing To The Lord, is the most recent document from the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) describes MUSIC this way:

       As our predecessors did, we find ourselves “singing

Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God”…Good music “makes the liturgical prayers of the Christian community more alive and fervent so that everyone can praise and beseech the Triune God more powerfully, more intently, and more effectively.”

       Music is an art form created by God, given to us to give back to him.  Music is a gift from God.  It has touched hearts since the beginning of time.  It expresses the beauty of prayer, allowing the assembly to pray as one.  Music in the liturgy can bridge generations, allowing lives to be transformed and hearts to be moved toward God. 

       The four Music Ministries of St. Mary of the Assumption invite you to extend your gift or “give it back” by joining us in our mission as a member.  It really doesn’t take much of your personal time.  The Traditional Choir and Contemporary Choir meet 30 minutes before mass to rehearse and the Gospel Choir meets every other Tuesday at 8:00 PM.  And I would add that our rehearsals are very enjoyable as we gather like a “family” to sing our praises to the Lord.  All three music ministries invite singers as well as musicians of any level expertise and encourage young people of high school and college age to inquire.

Contemporary Choir: This group leads the congregation in song at the 9:30 AM Sunday Mass. Additional singers and instrumentalists are welcome. A fantastic voice and a lot of time are NOT required. Practice is held in the church on Sunday at 9:00 AM before the 9:30 Sunday Mass. Call the director, Call Dot Ridley (301 627-3411) or email: dridley@att.net

Traditional Choir: This choir specializes in traditional song and rehearses every Sunday after the 9:30 AM Mass. The choir sings at the 11:30 AM Mass. Additional members are very much welcome, particularly male singers with base voices. Joe DeGeorge is the Cantor. If interested, please call the director and organist, Peter Patente (301 449-6394).

Gospel Choir: This choir rehearses every other Tuesday from 8:00 to 9:00 PM and sings at the 5:30 PM Saturday Mass every other week.  They love to serve God with their voices in song. All are welcome to join, call the director, Tyrone Johnson (301 385-3594).

Provides piano accompaniment on Holy Days and every other 5:30 PM Saturday Mass.  Cantors are welcomed and encouraged to “Sing to the Lord a new song.”
